Discover the inspiring life and martyrdom of St. Alexander, Hieromartyr and Bishop of Jerusalem, commemorated on December 12. This video retells the profound story of a third-century bishop whose unwavering faith, wisdom, and devotion shaped early Christianity. St. Alexander was a disciple of the great Church Father Clement of Alexandria, and later became Bishop of Flavia Cappadocia. During the reign of Emperor Septimius Severus (193–211), he was arrested for the faith and endured three years of imprisonment. After his release, he journeyed to Jerusalem to venerate the holy sites, where—through divine revelation—he was asked to remain. In 212 A.D., he was appointed co-administrator to the elderly Patriarch Narcissus, a rare event in ancient Church history. Following St. Narcissus’s repose, St. Alexander governed the Church of Jerusalem for 38 years, promoting the spiritual enlightenment of Christians and establishing the first Christian theological library in Jerusalem. Under the brutal persecution of Emperor Decius (249–251), St. Alexander was again arrested, tortured, and condemned to be devoured by wild beasts—yet miraculously remained unharmed. He ultimately surrendered his soul to God in prison, sealing his witness with martyrdom.
